The appearance of the first graphical user interface and
image processing technology in the late 80's accelerated the spread of the
concept of an electronic document management system and its further development. This was
especially true for different approaches for translating the extensive
paper-based information into electronic form. Over the next few years, the
concept of an electronic document management system has been developed from a simple graphical
image of the document to the idea of document management. The idea of
manipulating information in electronic rather than paper form has become
common.
In the very near future, electronic documents management can include
hypertext links, text objects, more complex nature and relational data. This
will combine structured and unstructured information in a single document.
The processing of electronic documents management system
will be the most important service within the local network after the usual
communication services. As a bit is the simplest element of binary information,
and a database field - simple structured alphanumeric information, so the
document will be the simplest element of unstructured multimedia information.
It will dynamically limited only by its content, structure, data formats and
standards, transmission mode, and most importantly, the nature of its use. When
you change any of these settings will vary and paper.
Modern electronic document management system - it's shape, which is similar to
the familiar paper-based document processing and which is consistent with the
use of closely related technologies in the framework of the so-called
electronic document management systems (Electronic Document Management Systems
- EDMS). Systems EDMS, working mostly on distributed architectures that
implement various combinations of technologies for collecting, indexing,
storage, retrieval and viewing electronic documents.
